Description

Our team took on the challenge of giving an existing retail building in Matale a completely new and exciting identity, honoring the town’s rich heritage as part of the Kandian Kingdom. Matale was particularly known for its lacquer work using distinct colours and patterns. The design draws inspiration from the Ādārakoṇḍu motif found in traditional Sri Lankan lacquer work, a pattern of plain lines perpendicular to the shaft’s length that elegantly divide other motifs. This timeless decoration informed the bold, sleek vertical lines of the façade, framing diamond motifs within. A vibrant palette of vermillion red (sādiliṅgham), orpiment yellow (hiriyal), black (kalu-pāta) creates a striking yet harmonious presence, celebrating both tradition and contemporary design.

Inside, the vertical line concept continues in a modern interpretation through the staircase spaces, featuring beautifully crafted MDF CNC-cut designs in soft nude tones. The counter areas carry forward this CNC-cut detailing, showcasing sleek geometric patterns in light beige, while the ceiling introduces square-shaped stripes in contrasting beige, brown and purple tones, adding depth and visual interest. The entire space feels inviting and dynamic, with shelves finished in elegant gray and accented with timber textures, creating a visually pleasing environment that delights every customer.
